Voice Actor Spotlight: Cheryl Chong
Meet Cheryl Chong! A bilingual voice actor bringing a warm, global sound to projects from Austin, Texas.
I first worked with Cheryl when she joined one of our Cartoon Voice Acting Workshops. I always love highlighting bilingual and multilingual talent because speaking more than one language can be such a valuable advantage in voiceover — especially when actors begin thinking beyond their immediate market. Cheryl is a great example of building a career that crosses borders, with work spanning the U.S. and Southeast Asia while continuing to expand into new areas of performance!
Cheryl Chong is a bilingual voice actor from Singapore, fluent in English and Malay, known for a warm, friendly and internationally versatile sound. Her accent range includes Neutral English, Singaporean/Malaysian English, General American and British English.
Cheryl began recording professional voiceover projects in Singapore in 2015 before relocating to Austin in 2019, where she now works remotely from her home studio. Her experience spans commercials, digital campaigns, corporate explainers, narration, eLearning, animation and scripted podcast audio dramas.
For Cheryl, one of the things she enjoys most about voiceover is the opportunity to collaborate with creatives around the world and use her voice to help bring meaningful stories to life.
Building a Global Voiceover Career
One of the most interesting things about Cheryl's career is that moving halfway around the world didn't mean leaving behind the markets where she had already built her voiceover career.
From her home studio in Austin, she has continued recording projects for clients and audiences both in the U.S. and internationally. Her work has included campaigns and branded content for the Singapore and Malaysian markets alongside corporate, commercial and narrative projects produced elsewhere around the world.
Her recent work also includes additional social campaigns, product promos and a radio spot for the Malaysian market.
That international background has become an important part of Cheryl's voiceover identity. In addition to English and Malay, her ability to work authentically with Southeast Asian voices and accents gives her a perspective and sound that can be especially valuable for global projects.
Stretching Into Character Work
While commercial and corporate voiceover have long been an important part of Cheryl's career, character work has become an increasingly exciting area of growth.
When Cheryl first connected with Keep Dreaming Creative in 2023, she was already an experienced working voice actor but wanted to explore areas beyond the corporate and commercial work she was booking most consistently.
She joined us for an in-studio cartoon voice acting workshop and, despite admitting she was nervous going in, deliberately chose some of the more challenging material to work on.
Afterward, Cheryl shared that the session had given her a safe space to stretch herself creatively and encouraged her to continue developing that side of her performance.
Since then, her growing body of character work has included an animatic pilot, scripted fiction podcasts and recurring audio drama roles.
She voiced a mother character in the Tea Leaves Last animatic pilot from Asians in Animation, played Nora in the “East Within West” episode of Voyage Media’s Hope Lives Here, and voiced Madame Gao, Pirate Queen of Mars, in the scripted sci-fi audio drama Sanctuary.
More recently, Cheryl joined another Voyage Media production, Taking Time, voicing scientist Naomi Hu across episodes 1–8 of the comedy/drama/sci-fi podcast series.
For Cheryl, that progression has only made her more interested in seeing how far she can take character performance.
“It has been fun voicing various characters for podcast audio dramas, so I'm excited to explore and stretch myself further with more character VO work — hopefully in more audio dramas and also for video games and animation projects.”
Continuing to Learn
Another part of Cheryl's journey that we think is worth highlighting is that professional development hasn't stopped just because she's booking. As her interests have expanded, so has her training.
Cheryl has pursued dedicated dubbing training while also working privately on dialects including General American and British RP.
She's continued developing the technical side of her business as well, upgrading her microphone and interface, improving the acoustic treatment of her home recording space and completing additional audio-production training.
It's a good reminder that a voiceover career isn't really built around reaching one finish line. Actors continue identifying new skills, strengthening weaker areas, adapting their studios and exploring genres that challenge them in different ways.
For Cheryl, that's meant taking an established strength in commercial and corporate voiceover while steadily adding more tools to the toolbox.
Cheryl's Advice for Voice Actors
One phrase Cheryl frequently comes back to during the audition process is:
"Rejection is redirection."
Rather than viewing every role she doesn't book as a rejection, Cheryl prefers to think of casting as a selection process.
In an industry where auditioning is such a significant part of the job, that distinction can make a big difference.
Her advice is to keep going, stay resourceful and continue learning. Work with reputable voiceover coaches. Attend workshops and workout groups. Audit sessions when you can. Listen to VO podcasts and webinars. Build genuine industry relationships and use tools such as LinkedIn to create opportunities rather than simply waiting for them to arrive.
And perhaps most importantly, don't use someone else's timeline to measure your own.

Cheryl's own career is a great example of that!
From recording projects in Singapore to building a remote studio in Austin, continuing to work internationally and steadily expanding into new areas of performance, her voiceover career hasn't followed one straight path — and that's part of what makes the journey interesting.
